ESTATE CROPS NEWS – Acceleration of the use of superior sugarcane seeds with bud chip seedlings continues to be encouraged at the level of flat seed garden (KBD) breeders and developer farmers to meet the demand for seedlings in support of the ratoon unloading program and planting new sugar cane (plan cane). The use of bud chip sugarcane planting material is the application of sugarcane cultivation technology in an effort to achieve the national sugar self-sufficiency program.
Budchips sugarcane nursery is a step forward in implementing the ratoon unloading program which often has difficulty meeting the needs for certified seedlings obtained from KBD. The use of superior seeds of sugarcane bud chips in 1 hectare of KBD produces 50-60 tonnes of seeds, equivalent to 350,000- 420,000 budchips. The need for budchips in one hectare of new plane cane planting takes 12000-18000 seedlings, equivalent to 2-2.5 tons of mules. So that in 1 ha, the area of KBD is able to meet the needs of new planting areas (plane cane) reaching 29 – 35 ha. Making KBD requires a large cost by using bud chips sugarcane seeds is more efficient and able to reduce the KBD area reaches 75-80%.
Lack of achievement of the target of the ratoon unloading program so far is due to the limited number of certified seeds from the KBD because the need for new planting of mules requires 8-10 tons of mule seeds per hectare so that 1 ha of seeds from KBD is only sufficient for a new planting area of 7-8 ha.
The superiority of budchip sugarcane seeds is like “one eye swordsman” because after being transferred to the field, the cane can form 10-20 tillers. The tillers will grow perfectly until the harvest is 8-10 stems per clump while the seedlings are from mules, only 1-4 tillers. What is even more proud is that the budchip seedlings are in simultaneous formation of saplings at the age of 1-3 months. The growth of sugarcane from the beginning has grown uniformly, making the maturity level of the sugarcane in the same field, increasing the yield, and the production of the unity of the planting area.
Sugarcane planting in the development area of bud chips is emphasized in areas with technical irrigation or areas where the distribution of rainfall is clear in the hope that it can reduce the risk of death and the amount of embroidery due to drought at the beginning of planting.
