ESTATE CROPS INFO – The Covid-19 pandemic has not been bored and is reluctant to leave Indonesia even though it has hit for almost a year. The public is required to comply with health protocols so that the spread of this virus does not become increasingly rampant. Hand sanitizers also seem to be one of the items that must be carried everywhere.
With the content of alcohol and antimicrobial agents, hand sanitizers can inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses on the hands. Unfortunately, the alcohol and other chemicals in it also make hands dry, irritate, and feel like they burn.
As an alternative, Nugroho Utomo (Researcher of IPCRI, IAARD) in the Plantation Infotech article said that hand sanitizers can be made from natural ingredients such as palm sap and areca nuts. Palm sap that is fermented and distilled can produce 30-40% alcohol content. This level can still be increased again by the distillation method to achieve the minimum alcohol content required by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), which is 60%.
Meanwhile, areca seeds are able to replace the function of triclosan because they contain saponins as antibacterial, flavonoids to inhibit fungal growth, and tannins as a natural antiseptic.
To keep hands moist, virgin coconut oil (VCO) can be combined in the formulation. VCO is virgin coconut oil which is extracted from fresh coconut and contains fatty acids which are good for the skin. Not only moisturizing, VCO is also able to inhibit the growth of E. coli bacteria.
The steps for making hand sanitizers from various palm plant products are as follows: (1) Heat the areca nut that has been added with distilled water for 15 minutes from the time the temperature reaches 900C. (2) Filter the infusion with filter paper and store it in a closed container. (3) Add VCO to the bioethanol resulting from the distillation of tilapia and stir until dissolved. (4) Add the betel nut infusion and distilled water, stirring until homogeneous. (5) Pack in a bottle.
The ingredients are (1) 70 ml of Bioethanol 86%, (2) 10 ml of 2% Pinang Seed Infusion, (3) 1 ml of VCO, and (4) 19 ml of distilled water. (Anjas)
