Bogor, July 3, 2020 , Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth) is a plant that produces essential oils. This essential oil is often called patchouli oil in the world of international trade. Indonesia is a major producer of patchouli oil in the world by controlling 85% of the world market.

The need for patchouli seeds is increasing with the discovery of various benefits from the essential oil produced, including as a mixture for making cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and aromatherapy which functions as a binder/fixative agent and pharmaceuticals.

The Ministry of Agriculture through the Agency for Agricultural Research and Development has facilitated researchers and engineers to continue to produce technological innovations and agricultural development. Research Institute for Spices and Medicinal Plants (ISMCRI), in accordance with one of its duties and functions, namely 1) Research on genetics, breeding, seeding, and utilization of germplasm of spice, medicinal, aromatic, and cashew plants and 2) Implementation of morphological, physiological research , ecology, entomology and phytopathology of spice, medicinal, aromatic and cashew plants.

Research and development of patchouli that has been carried out by ISMCRI has resulted in various technologies and innovations including varieties and SOPs for Patchouli Cultivation.

As a form of ISMCRI’s attention to the development of patchouli, and as a means of disseminating technology and innovations that have been produced, ISMCRI held a webinar with the theme “Support for Superior Varieties and Good Cultivation Technology to Increase Production, Quality and Supply Chain Stability of Patchouli Oil”. The webinar will be held on Friday, July 03, 2020 at 13.30 WIB – 16.00 WIB in the Piperaceae meeting room, the Research Institute for Spices and Medicinal Plants virtually via Zoom.

The moderator of this webinar is Dr. Sukamto (Researcher for Plant Protection ISMCRI), with competent sources in their fields: 1) Dra. Endang Hadipoentyanti, MS (Balittro Breeding Researcher) who explained about “Introduction to Superior Varieties and Patchouli Seeds”; 2) Ir. Octivia Trisilawati, M.Sc (Researcher of Ecophysiology Balittro) who provided information related to “Good and Right Patchouli Cultivation”; and 3) Ir. Lita Agnes Ginting (Sourcing Manager of PT Gidauvan Indonesia) who gave an explanation about “Status of Supply and Utilization of Patchouli”.

The number of participants in this webinar activity was 400 people who came from various professions including extension workers, researchers, students, State Civil Apparatus (ASN), entrepreneurs, traders, lecturers/teachers, private employees, farmers, entrepreneurs, housewives (IRT), doctors, pharmacists, and students scattered online throughout Indonesia.

In addition to the presentation of material by the resource persons, this online webinar activity also held interactive discussions with the participants online. The activity ended with the distribution of certificates given online.

It is hoped that this online Webinar activity can be a source of knowledge for the community, especially in the development of patchouli in Indonesia. (Anjas)
