ESTATE CROP NEWS – Indonesian Spice & Medicinal Crops Research Institute held a Virtual Technical Guidance with the theme “INTRODUCTION TO VARIETY, CULTIVATION AND REFINING OF SERAIWANGI” with a total of 446 participants who attended zoomeeting and youtube. Participants come from various professions, and various domicile origins throughout Indonesia. Each participant gets free materials and certificate facilities.
This Technical Guidance activity was opened by the Head of the Indonesian Spice & Medicinal Crops Research Institute, represented by Dra. Nur Maslahah, MSi and accompanied by Moderator Dr. Sukamto and the Speakers. The materials presented in this Technical Guidance include 1) Materials for Superior Seraiwangi Varieties with Drs. Cheppy Gratitude; 2) Materials on Lemongrass Cultivation Techniques with Ir. Octivia Trisilawati, MSc; 3) Material on the Distillation of Fragrant Lemongrass Oil with the resource person Hikmat Mulyana, Ssi.
Dra. Nur Maslahah, MSi in his speech conveyed that the topic raised for technical guidance at this time was Introduction to Varieties, Cultivation and Distillation of Lemongrass, which is the 3rd ISMCRI Online Tecnical Guidance (TG) activity which has been carried out in 2021.
In his presentation of the material, Drs. Cheppy Syukur said that the suitability of the seraiwangi land is suitable for growing on fertile, loose soil that contains a lot of organic matter, optimum soil pH is 6.0 – 7.5, and is suitable for growing on various soil contours, likes large amounts of sunlight and low rainfall. too abundant. Hot weather, sunlight will stimulate the formation of oil in plants. Can grow in cold climates, but productivity decreases. In areas with abundant rainfall, harvesting can be done more often than in dry areas, but the oil produced is lower,” said Cheppy Syukur.
The key to the success of lemongrass cultivation is the application of standard operating procedures (SOP) for cultivation and several things that need to be considered: 1) Development in the appropriate area; 2) Using superior varieties; 3) Optimal cultivation actions (preparation of land & seeds, maintenance, cropping patterns, pest control, sanitation); 4) Proper harvest and post-harvest processes,” said Ir. Octivia Trisilawati, MSc in her presentation.
Hikmat Mulyana, Ssi said that refining is a process of isolating essential oils from their raw materials with the help of water vapor, which then undergoes a condensation process to produce these essential oils. The principle of separation is based on the difference in the boiling point of each component by using heat as a separating power. There are 3 methods of distillation of essential oils that are commonly used, namely: 1) Distillation by boiling (water distillation); 2) Distillation by steam (water and steam distillation); 3). Direct steam distillation (steam distillation).
Distillation of citronella leaves can be done by steam distillation (water and steam distillation) because it is more economical than direct steam. The capacity of the boiler in the distillation can reach 1 ton of material with a density of 0.2 Kg/liter. Chopping/cutting the leaves before being put into the boiler can increase the boiler capacity and prevent the occurrence of steam lines in the boiler so that the oil yield will increase,” said Hikmat Mulyana, Ssi.
