ESTATE CROPS INFO – Rubber breeding activities in Indonesia have occurred for 4 generations and result in increasing plant productivity. IRR (Indonesian Rubber Research) series clones are the fourth generation of rubber clones that its selection started in 1985. The clones have high potency in productivity (>2.500 kg/ha) and have fast growth rate so that the immature period of rubber plants can be shortened and the tapping activity can be done in less than 4-year-old plants. Moreover, IRR series clones also have moderate to resistant characteristic against leaf fall disease of Colletotrichum. The results of the multilocation test showed that IRR series clones have a wide range of adaptability and stability. However, The IRR series clones have rarely been adopted by smallholders in Indonesia. Due to lack of knowledge, smallholders mostly utilized seedlings as planting materials rather than trusting the IRR series clones. The role of advisors is the key factor in order to improve the adoption of IRR series clones in Indonesia. This attempt will certainly boost natural rubber production in Indonesian rubber plantation.
