Performances of 10 superior varieties of Sugarcane in KP- Ngemplak-Pati

ESTATE CROPS NEWS – Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is an important and high economic value crop as sugar producer. Increasing sugarcane production is strongly influenced by the availability of high quality of superior seed, and its cultivation is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, both soil and climate.

Therefore, in the future its assembly program is focused on producing varieties well adapted to specific location. Basic character criteria in selection of the superior sugarcane varieties are high yield potential, maturity types, land physical suitability, resistant to certain pests, and (most important one) well adapted on specific region.

There have been more than 70 sugarcane varieties in Indonesia released by the Indonesian Center for Sugar Research and Development (P3GI). The Indonesian Sweetener and Fiber Crops Research Institute, Malang (recently mandated to also study sweetener plants, especially sugarcane) has been collecting as many as 20 superior varieties nationally.
All the varieties have been planted in the Experimental Station of Ngemplak-Pati. To find out their potentials on growth and productivity, below is presented production characteristics of 10 out of the 20 varieties.
